Renewing road tax online takes about 3 minutes if everything is in order — and the OneMotoring portal is open 24/7. The trick is making sure your insurance and inspection are valid before you start, otherwise the system blocks you.

Use the Road Tax Calculator to confirm your exact bill before paying.

What you need before you log in

Three prerequisites. Sort these first:

1. Valid motor insurance. Must cover the full road tax renewal period (3, 6, or 12 months). Your insurer transmits validity electronically to LTA via the Motor Insurance Database — you don't upload anything, but the system checks live.

2. Valid vehicle inspection certificate. Required for cars over 3 years old:

  • 3 to 10 years old: inspect every 2 years
  • Above 10 years: inspect every year
  • New cars: no inspection needed for the first 3 years

Inspection at VICOM, JIC, or STA. Cost: S$66 (regular car), more for taxis or commercial.

3. All outstanding fines cleared. LTA blocks renewal if you have unpaid traffic fines, ERP charges, or court summonses. Settle them via OneMotoring → "Pay Fees, Fines and Taxes" first.

The OneMotoring renewal walkthrough

  1. Go to onemotoring.lta.gov.sg
  2. Click "Login" (top right) → Singpass login
  3. From the dashboard, click "Renew Road Tax"
  4. Enter vehicle registration number → click Search
  5. The system shows:
    • Current expiry date
    • New expiry options: 6 months or 12 months
    • Insurance status (must show "Valid")
    • Inspection status (must show "Valid" if applicable)
  6. Choose 6 or 12 months. Most owners pick 12 (no admin fee difference).
  7. Click "Pay" → choose payment method:
    • PayNow QR (instant)
    • Credit / debit card (instant, may have card-issuer convenience fee)
    • Internet banking (DBS, OCBC, UOB, SCB)
  8. Receive PDF confirmation. Print or save — but you do NOT need to display anything on the windscreen anymore (LTA scrapped the disc in 2017).

Total time: 3–5 minutes once insurance and inspection are sorted.

Road tax cost by engine size (2026)

For petrol cars, the formula is engine-capacity based:

Engine capacity (cc) Annual road tax
Up to 600 S$200
601 – 1,000 S$200 + S$0.125 × (EC − 600)
1,001 – 1,600 S$250 + S$0.375 × (EC − 1,000)
1,601 – 2,000 S$475 + S$0.75 × (EC − 1,600)
2,001 – 3,000 S$775 + S$1.5 × (EC − 2,000)
Above 3,000 S$2,275 + S$2 × (EC − 3,000)

Worked example for a 1,798cc Toyota Camry: S$475 + S$0.75 × (1798 − 1600) = S$475 + S$148.50 = S$623.50/year

Surcharges:

  • Diesel cars: +50%
  • Cars over 10 years old: 10–50% surcharge stepping by 10% per additional year

EV road tax (2026)

EVs are taxed by motor power (kW), not engine capacity:

Power (kW) Annual road tax
Up to 7.5 S$200
7.6 – 32.5 S$200 + S$2 × (kW − 7.5)
32.6 – 70 S$250 + S$3.75 × (kW − 32.5)
70.1 – 157.5 S$390.625 + S$7.5 × (kW − 70)
Above 157.5 S$1,047 + S$10 × (kW − 157.5)

A Tesla Model 3 RWD (208 kW) would owe roughly: S$1,047 + S$10 × 50.5 = S$1,552/year

EVs have a frozen (since 2023) Additional Flat Component to bridge the difference with comparable ICE road tax — currently at S$200 for cars of 7.5kW–230kW.

Renewal periods and timing

You can choose 6 or 12 months for cars. Motorcycles can pick 6 or 12 months. Goods vehicles and buses have additional period options.

You can renew up to 60 days before expiry. The new period stacks onto the unexpired portion — you don't lose the days you've already paid for.

Late renewal surcharges (after expiry):

  • 1 to 7 days late: S$10
  • 8 days to 1 month: S$20
  • 1 to 2 months late: S$50
  • 2 to 3 months late: S$80
  • More than 3 months: 50% more road tax + S$80, and the vehicle may be deregistered involuntarily after 12 months of expiry

Plus, driving with expired road tax is an offence — fine up to S$2,000 + 2× unpaid road tax. Insurance may also be void for accidents during the expired period.

Saving on road tax: legitimate strategies

1. Time the inspection. Inspect 2 weeks before renewal — gives you buffer if the car needs minor repairs to pass.

2. Keep insurance unbroken. Switching insurers is fine but ensure no gap. A 1-day insurance gap blocks road tax renewal.

3. Avoid the 10-year-old surcharge if possible. The 10–50% surcharge by age can add S$70–$300/year. Renewing the COE doesn't reset the age (which is from first registration). For older cars, the surcharge often makes deregistration more attractive.

4. EV early-adopter window. EVs registered between 2024 and end of 2025 enjoyed full ARF rebate caps (max S$15,000 from 2024). 2026 EV owners pay full ARF.

Common road tax renewal mistakes

  • Insurance ends one day before road tax period. Renewal blocked. Renew insurance for full period first.
  • Renewing without an inspection. System blocks; you'll get the message "Inspection required". Inspect, then come back.
  • Forgetting the diesel surcharge. Diesel pickups owe 50% more — calculator is essential.
  • Paying via foreign credit card. Some foreign cards block PayNow Corporate transactions. Use a local DBS/OCBC/UOB/SCB or PayNow QR.
  • Driving on expired tax "just for one day". Insurance can be voided; even minor accidents become uninsured.
