Why Singapore Uses Different BMI Standards
If you've checked your BMI on an international website and been told you're "normal," you might want to check again. Singapore and Asia-Pacific countries use lower thresholds because Asian populations tend to carry more body fat at lower BMI values and face increased health risks earlier.
The HPB classifies BMI 23.0 and above as overweight (international standard: 25.0) and BMI 27.5 and above as obese (international: 30.0). The healthy range for Singaporeans is 18.5 to 22.9.
This matters because health screening results, insurance assessments, and medical advice in Singapore all use the local standard. An international calculator might say you're fine when HPB guidelines say you're at risk.
Singapore BMI Classification
Singapore uses BMI 23.0 as the overweight threshold (not 25.0). This reflects higher health risks in Asian populations at lower BMI values. Source: HPB / MOH Singapore.
