How this calculator works

Every Singapore Citizen and PR is automatically covered by MediShield Life — the mandatory base layer run by CPF Board that covers B2/C ward stays in public hospitals. An Integrated Shield Plan wraps around it to unlock higher ward classes (B1 restructured → A ward → private hospital) and larger claim limits.

The calculator uses MOH's published IP Premium Benchmarks — a normalized view across AIA, Great Eastern, Prudential, Income and Singlife. Individual insurer quotes vary ±15% from the midpoint. MediSave covers premiums up to the age-banded Additional Withdrawal Limit (AWL); anything above is cash.

Frequently asked

How much does an Integrated Shield Plan cost in Singapore?expand_more

At age 35 non-smoker, an IP covering A-ward in a restructured hospital costs around S$580/year on top of your S$390 MediShield Life base — about S$970/year total. For private-hospital coverage, expect ~S$900 IP + S$390 MSHL = S$1,290/year. Premiums roughly double every 15 years; by age 65 the same A-ward plan is around S$3,340/year. The calculator shows exact bands and 30-year projection.

Can I use MediSave to pay IP premiums?expand_more

Yes, up to the Additional Withdrawal Limit (AWL) per insured person per year: S$300 for under-20s, S$600 for 21–40, S$900 for 41–70, S$1,100 for 71+. Anything above AWL must be paid in cash. At age 40, MediSave covers roughly 100% of a B1-ward plan but only ~60% of a private-hospital plan; the gap is cash.

Which insurer should I pick for my IP?expand_more

Premium differences across AIA, Great Eastern, Prudential, Income and Singlife are typically within ±15% at the same ward tier. More important: claims handling, panel-hospital coverage, and rider add-ons (e.g. deductible/co-pay rider, cancer treatment coverage). All five plans are regulated to the same MOH standards for MediSave-deductible portions. Get quotes from 2–3 for your exact age before committing.

Is MediShield Life compulsory?expand_more

Yes. Every Singapore citizen and PR is automatically enrolled in MediShield Life, and premiums are payable from MediSave or cash. Integrated Shield Plans are optional — they wrap around MSHL to give you better ward class and higher claim limits. If you only want MSHL (B2/C ward coverage), you don't need an IP, and you'll pay only the base premium shown in this calculator.

Why do IP premiums rise so sharply after 60?expand_more

Claims experience. Hospitalization rates triple between ages 40 and 70. Insurers price this forward: the 41–50 to 71–75 band sees premiums roughly quadruple in most plans. Some Singaporeans downgrade from private to A-ward in their 60s to manage cost; the calculator lets you model this by switching ward choice and re-running.
