The Singapore Work Pass System, Decoded

Singapore's work pass system is layered: a salary check first, COMPASS scoring second, and dependant policies orthogonal to both. These calculators map the system end-to-end so you can run the numbers before accepting an offer or starting an application.

EP salary threshold is the first gate. Age-tiered from $5,600/mo at age 23 up to $10,700/mo at age 45+ (general sectors); $6,200–$11,800 in financial services. Only fixed monthly salary counts — variable pay is excluded.

COMPASS is the second gate (since Sept 2023). Six criteria — salary, qualifications, diversity, support for local employment, plus skills + strategic economic priorities bonuses. Pass at 40 points; waiver at 80; auto-exempt at $22,500/mo salary.

Dependent Pass rules are separate — sponsor needs $6,000+/mo to bring spouse and children. Note: DP holders cannot work under a Letter of Consent since May 2021. To work, they need their own work pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to qualify for an Employment Pass in Singapore?expand_more

Two things: (1) meet the minimum qualifying salary ($5,600/mo general or $6,200/mo financial services in 2026, age-tiered up to $10,700+/$11,800+ at age 45+), and (2) score at least 40 points on the COMPASS framework (or earn ≥$22,500/mo for auto-exemption).

Can my family come with me on an EP?expand_more

Yes. EP holders earning at least $6,000/month can sponsor a Dependent Pass for legally-married spouse and unmarried children under 21. Parents can apply for LTVP if you earn ≥$12,000/month. Common-law partners are not eligible for DP — only LTVP.

What is COMPASS and when did it start?expand_more

COMPASS (Complementarity Assessment Framework) is Singapore's points-based EP eligibility system, in effect from 1 September 2023 for new applications and 1 September 2024 for renewals. It replaced the old "salary-only" framework with a 6-criterion scorecard.
