How Dependent Pass Eligibility Works

Dependent Pass (DP) lets EP, S Pass, PEP, EntrePass, and Tech.Pass holders bring their legally married spouse and unmarried children under 21 to live in Singapore. The sponsor must earn at least $6,000/month in fixed salary. Common-law partners and parents are not eligible for DP — they fall back to LTVP with stricter conditions.

info

DP holders cannot work under a Letter of Consent. The LoC scheme was discontinued from 1 May 2021. To work in Singapore, DP holders need to apply for their own work pass (EP, S Pass, or Work Permit).

Eligibility shown is indicative. Final approval is at MOM's discretion. Verify with MOM before applying.

Common Dependent Pass Scenarios

Dependent Pass eligibility hinges on three things: the sponsor's pass type, the sponsor's salary, and the family member's legal relationship to the sponsor. Many edge cases trip up applicants — common-law partnerships, stepchildren, married adult children — so it's worth checking before relocating.

Scenario 1 — typical EP family: EP holder at $9,000/mo, legally married, two biological children aged 4 and 8. All three qualify for DP. Total: 3 dependent passes. Sponsor easily clears the $6,000 minimum.

Scenario 2 — borderline sponsor: EP holder at $5,500/mo (below DP threshold), legally married. Spouse can apply for LTVP — typically possible at the same $6,000 sponsor minimum but with longer queue and slightly different conditions. Children under 21 are typically not eligible for any dependent pass at this sponsor salary.

Scenario 3 — bringing parents:EP holder at $15,000/mo, parents in their 60s. Parents qualify for LTVP (sponsor > $12,000 threshold). Note: parents are NEVER eligible for DP regardless of sponsor salary — LTVP is the only path. Approval is more discretionary than for spouse/children.

If your DP holder wants to work: apply for a regular work pass (EP, S Pass, or Work Permit). The DP itself does not authorise work since May 2021. Some employers handle the application; others require the candidate to apply independently. Check our COMPASS and EP Salary calculators to understand whether the DP holder would qualify for an EP based on the offered role.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the salary requirement to sponsor a Dependent Pass?expand_more

Sponsors must earn a fixed monthly salary of at least $6,000 to bring their spouse and children on a Dependent Pass. Below this, you can apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) for spouse instead — but children below the threshold are typically not eligible for any dependent pass.

Can a Dependent Pass holder work in Singapore?expand_more

No, not directly. Since 1 May 2021, the Letter of Consent (LoC) scheme has been discontinued — DP holders now need to apply for their own work pass (EP, S Pass, or Work Permit) to work in Singapore. The DP itself does not authorise work.

Can I bring my common-law partner on a Dependent Pass?expand_more

No. Only legally married spouses qualify for DP. Common-law partners and unmarried partners can apply for an LTVP under the sponsor's pass — typically requires documentation of a substantial relationship duration, and approval is at MOM's discretion.

Can my parents come on a Dependent Pass?expand_more

No. Parents are NEVER eligible for Dependent Pass regardless of dependency. Parents can apply for an LTVP, but only if the sponsor earns at least $12,000/month. The LTVP queue is longer and approval rate lower than for spouse/children DPs.

What if my child is over 21?expand_more

Children must be under 21 and unmarried to qualify for DP, regardless of dependency status or whether they are still in education. Married children of any age do not qualify. Children over 21 studying full-time in Singapore may apply for LTVP via separate process.

Are stepchildren eligible for Dependent Pass?expand_more

No. Only biological children and legally adopted children qualify for DP. Stepchildren without legal adoption are not eligible — though LTVP may apply via separate process at MOM's discretion.

How long does Dependent Pass approval take?expand_more

Typically 1–3 weeks for online applications. Complex cases (e.g., children with special circumstances, parents on LTVP) can take 4–8 weeks. Application is via MOM's online portal — supporting documents include the marriage certificate, birth certificates, and sponsor's in-principle approval letter.
