How to actually use your CHAS card

Knowing your tier is half the picture. Here's what to do whether you don't yet have a card, or you do and want to use it well.

Don't have a CHAS card yet?

  • Apply online at chas.sg — usually approved in 15 working days. You can also apply at any CHAS clinic.
  • What you need: SingPass for the applicant + NRIC of all household members (income is auto-pulled from IRAS).
  • Card validity: 2 years. You'll be prompted to re-apply before it expires.
  • Already a senior? Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation cards are issued automatically by cohort — no application needed.

Already have one — use it well

  • Bring NRIC + CHAS card to a participating clinic. The subsidy is auto-applied at check-in.
  • Common illness visits (cough/cold/flu) are subsidised for Blue, Orange, MG and PG — but not Green.
  • Chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, lipid disorders, asthma, COPD, etc.) are covered at all tiers including Green — under the Healthier SG / CDMP scheme.
  • CHAS Dental is a separate sub-scheme — covers selected procedures at private dental clinics.
  • Annual caps reset on 1 April each year, not the calendar year.

Households with no income are assessed on the home Annual Value shown on the property tax bill.

FAQ

How is my CHAS tier decided?add
For households with income, CHAS uses per-capita household monthly income (PCHI) — total household monthly income divided by the number of people living together. PCHI of $1,500 or below is Blue, $1,501–$2,300 is Orange, and above $2,300 is Green. Households with no income are assessed on the home Annual Value instead.
What is the difference between CHAS Blue, Orange and Green?add
Blue gives the highest subsidies, covering common illnesses and chronic conditions. Orange covers chronic conditions and common illnesses at a lower rate. Green covers chronic conditions only, with no subsidy for common illnesses. All Singapore Citizens qualify for at least the Green tier for chronic disease management.
What are the Merdeka and Pioneer Generation tiers?add
Merdeka Generation (born in the 1950s) and Pioneer Generation (born 1949 or earlier) seniors receive enhanced CHAS subsidies that are higher than Blue. These cohort tiers override the income and Annual Value assessment. Exact eligibility also depends on Singapore citizenship dates.
How much can I claim per visit?add
Subsidy amounts vary by tier. Blue cardholders get up to $18.50 per visit for common illnesses and up to $125 per visit for complex chronic conditions. Green cardholders get up to $40 per visit for complex chronic conditions and no subsidy for common illnesses. Pioneer and Merdeka Generation rates are higher than Blue.
Does my home Annual Value affect my CHAS tier?add
Yes — for households with no income, the home Annual Value determines the tier: $21,000 or below is Blue, $21,001–$31,000 is Orange, and above $31,000 is Green. Households with income are assessed on per-capita income instead.
