What is Remedial Training (RT)?

Remedial Training (RT) is a mandatory fitness programme for Singapore NSmen who fail their IPPT (score below 51 points). NSmen must complete 20 supervised RT sessions at a designated Fitness Conditioning Centre (FCC) within their IPPT window to fulfil their fitness obligation. Sessions are typically held in the evenings on weekdays (around 7-9pm) and on weekend mornings, allowing NSmen to attend around their civilian work schedule.

Quick Reference

  • • 20 RT sessions required if you fail IPPT (score below 51 points)
  • • Each session lasts approximately 1 hour at a Fitness Conditioning Centre (FCC) — plan ~1.5 hours door-to-door
  • • Typical timing: weekday evenings 7–9pm or weekend mornings
  • • FCCs are spread across Singapore — book the FCC closest to home or workplace
  • • Multiple sessions per week are allowed to complete faster
  • • You can attempt IPPT at any time during RT — passing exempts you from remaining sessions
  • • Failure to complete RT within the IPPT window is an offence under the Enlistment Act
  • • RT does not pay Make-Up Pay and is conducted outside working hours

How Remedial Training Works

NSmen who do not pass their IPPT are required to complete 20 Remedial Training (RT) sessions within their IPPT window. RT sessions are conducted at designated Fitness Conditioning Centres (FCCs) across Singapore and are supervised by SAF fitness trainers. The 20-session requirement is fixed regardless of how badly you failed the IPPT — even a 50-point score (one point short of passing) still requires the full 20 sessions unless you re-attempt and pass IPPT.

You can complete sessions at your own pace — attending multiple sessions per week allows you to finish faster. Each session typically lasts about one hour and includes a mix of cardio, strength, and endurance training designed to improve your IPPT performance. Sessions are progressive — early sessions focus on basic conditioning, while later sessions include more IPPT-specific drills (push-ups, sit-ups, 2.4km run pacing).

You may also attempt IPPT at any point during your RT cycle. If you pass IPPT before completing all 20 sessions, you are exempted from the remaining sessions and may qualify for a cash incentive based on your score (Pass / Silver / Gold).

Deferments are possible for valid medical reasons (with a doctor's MC submitted via the NS Portal) or for extended overseas postings. Plan deferments early through the NS Portal rather than missing sessions and incurring an offence.

NSmen Attempting IPPT Gold

Some NSmen use RT-style supervised training as preparation before attempting IPPT for Gold.

  • Voluntary preparation: IPT (IPPT Preparatory Training) is the proper voluntary track
  • RT vs IPT: RT is mandatory after failure; IPT is voluntary preparation
  • Incentive: Only an IPPT pass earns the cash payout

IPPT vs IPT vs RT: Knowing the Three Tracks

Three distinct NS fitness tracks are commonly confused. Each serves a different purpose with different rules.

RT is also distinct from ICT (annual In-Camp Training, which is the operational reservist obligation, not a fitness obligation).

Planning Your RT Schedule

Most NSmen complete RT in 8–14 weeks, depending on session frequency and slot availability. Three common cadences:

Aggressive (3/week)

Three sessions weekly clears 20 sessions in just under 7 weeks. Suitable for NSmen with flexible evenings and good baseline fitness.

Risk: injury and burnout if untrained. Allow rest days.

Steady (2/week)

Two sessions weekly — typically one weekday evening plus one weekend morning — clears 20 sessions in 10 weeks. The most common cadence for working NSmen.

Balances training stimulus with recovery.

Conservative (1/week)

One session weekly stretches RT to 20 weeks. Only viable if your IPPT window comfortably accommodates 5+ months of weekly attendance.

Risk: missing the window if any session is skipped.

A pragmatic strategy is to attempt IPPT first, then immediately book RT slots upon failure rather than waiting. Booking early secures preferred slots at your nearest FCC. If your fitness improves during RT, attempt IPPT again — passing exits RT immediately, frees up the remaining slots, and unlocks the cash incentive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many RT sessions do I need to complete?expand_more

NSmen who fail IPPT must complete 20 Remedial Training (RT) sessions within their IPPT window. Each session is conducted at a designated Fitness Conditioning Centre (FCC) and typically lasts approximately one hour, with additional time for warm-up, cool-down, and admin (so plan for 1.5 hours door-to-door).

What happens if I miss the IPPT window?expand_more

If you do not pass IPPT or complete all 20 RT sessions within your IPPT window, you may face penalties under the Enlistment Act, including fines or other disciplinary action. It is important to plan your sessions early and book them ahead — popular evening slots fill up quickly, especially close to the window cutoff.

Can I do multiple RT sessions per week?expand_more

Yes, you can attend multiple RT sessions per week to complete your 20 sessions faster. There is no hard limit on sessions per week, though you should allow your body adequate rest between sessions to avoid injury. Many NSmen complete RT in 2-3 months by attending 2-3 sessions weekly.

What is the difference between RT and IPPT?expand_more

IPPT is the fitness test itself — you attempt to pass by scoring 51 or more points across push-ups, sit-ups, and the 2.4km run. RT (Remedial Training) is supervised physical training for those who fail IPPT. Completing 20 RT sessions fulfils your fitness obligation for that cycle even if you still cannot pass IPPT.

Can I do RT outside of Singapore?expand_more

No. RT must be conducted at SAF Fitness Conditioning Centres (FCCs) in Singapore under the supervision of SAF fitness trainers. If you are based overseas for work or study, you should apply for an overseas deferment via the NS Portal — extended overseas postings may qualify for a deferred IPPT window. Returning to Singapore on home leave is usually too short to clear RT, so plan deferments early.

What happens if I don’t complete RT within the window?expand_more

Failure to fulfil your IPPT obligation (either by passing IPPT or completing 20 RT sessions) within the window is a National Service offence under the Enlistment Act. Consequences may include monetary fines, a formal warning recorded against your NS file, and potential impact on future overseas trip approvals. Persistent non-compliance can be escalated to disciplinary proceedings. The most reliable path is to book RT sessions immediately when you receive your IPPT notice rather than leaving it to the end of the window.

Does the employer pay for RT time?expand_more

RT is generally conducted outside working hours (weekday evenings 7-9pm or weekend mornings), so it does not typically clash with work and employer pay is not affected. RT is not considered ICT, so Make-Up Pay does not apply to RT sessions. If an NSman is called to attend a full-day RT-related programme (rare), the standard NS leave and MUP rules for that specific call-up apply. Employers are not required to grant time off specifically for RT.

Can RT count toward IPPT Gold or substitute for IPPT?expand_more

No. RT fulfils your basic fitness obligation but does not earn IPPT Pass, Silver, or Gold awards. To qualify for an IPPT incentive (Pass/Silver/Gold) and the associated cash payout, you must pass the IPPT test itself with a qualifying score. You can attempt IPPT at any time during your RT cycle — if you pass, you exit RT and unlock the IPPT incentive.
