SUTD GPA Calculator (5.0 Scale)

Calculate your SUTD cumulative GPA with credit-weighted subject grades.

SUTD 5.0 ScaleCredit-Weighted

What is the SUTD GPA?

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) uses a 5.0 GPA scale, the same scale as NUS and NTU. Your GPA is a credit-weighted average: each subject's grade points are multiplied by its credit units and divided by total credits attempted. Most SUTD subjects carry 12 credit units, larger than the 4 modular credits used at NUS/NTU.

Quick Answer

SUTD uses a 5.0 GPA scale. To calculate your GPA: multiply each subject's grade points by its credit units, sum all results, then divide by total credit units. A student scoring A (5.0) in a 12-credit subject and B+ (4.0) in another 12-credit subject has a GPA of (60 + 48) / 24 = 4.50.

Quick Reference

  • • SUTD uses a 5.0 GPA scale — A+/A = 5.0, A- = 4.5, B+ = 4.0, down to F = 0.0
  • • First Class Honours: GPA 4.50+ | Second Class (Upper): 4.00–4.49 | Second Class (Lower): 3.50–3.99
  • • Third Class Honours: 3.00–3.49 | Pass: 2.00–2.99
  • • Most SUTD subjects carry 12 credit units
  • • Pass/fail subjects are excluded from GPA computation
  • • GPA is cumulative across all terms — later strong grades can improve a weak start

How It Works

SUTD uses a 5.0 GPA scale, the same as NUS and NTU. Your GPA is calculated by multiplying each subject's grade point by its credit units, summing all the products, then dividing by the total credit units attempted.

At SUTD, both A+ and A award 5.0 grade points, A- gives 4.5, and the scale decreases in 0.5 increments down to F at 0.0. Most SUTD subjects carry 12 credit units, which is larger than the typical 4 MCs at NUS or NTU. The credit-unit weighting means each subject has roughly equal weight — more so than at other universities where electives and core modules may differ significantly in credits.

Worked example: Term 1 results — 10.001 Advanced Mathematics I (12 credits, A = 5.0), 10.005 Computational Thinking (12 credits, B+ = 4.0), 02.001 The Digital World (12 credits, A- = 4.5), 10.007 Modelling the Systems World (12 credits, B = 3.5). Total weighted points = (60 + 48 + 54 + 42) = 204. Total credits = 48. Term GPA = 204/48 = 4.25 (Second Class Upper territory).

Honours classification: First Class (GPA ≥4.50), Second Class Upper (4.00–4.49), Second Class Lower (3.50–3.99), Third Class (3.00–3.49), Pass (2.00–2.99). Classifications are indicative — verify with your pillar office for specific programme requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grading system does SUTD use?expand_more

SUTD uses a 5.0 GPA scale, similar to NUS and NTU. A+ and A both award 5.0 grade points, A- gives 4.5, B+ gives 4.0, B gives 3.5, B- gives 3.0, C+ gives 2.5, C gives 2.0, D+ gives 1.5, D gives 1.0, and F gives 0.0. SUTD uses a credit-unit system with most subjects carrying 12 credit units.

What GPA do I need for Honours classification at SUTD?expand_more

SUTD honours classifications are: First Class Honours for GPA 4.50 and above, Second Class (Upper) Honours for GPA 4.00–4.49, Second Class (Lower) Honours for GPA 3.50–3.99, Third Class Honours for GPA 3.00–3.49, and Pass for GPA 2.00–2.99. These cutoffs are indicative — verify with your pillar or faculty.

How are credit units calculated at SUTD?expand_more

At SUTD, most subjects carry 12 credit units (compared to 4 modular credits at NUS/NTU). Your GPA is calculated by multiplying each subject's grade point by its credit units, summing all products, then dividing by the total credit units attempted. Subjects with more credit units have a proportionally greater impact on your GPA.

How does SUTD GPA compare to NUS and NTU?expand_more

SUTD, NUS, and NTU all use a 5.0 GPA scale, making them directly comparable at the grade-point level. However, each university's honour classification cutoffs may differ slightly. SUTD uses "First Class / Second Class (Upper) / Second Class (Lower) / Third Class" terminology, while NUS uses "Honours (Highest Distinction) / Honours (Distinction) / Honours (Merit) / Honours". A GPA of 4.50+ represents top-tier performance at all three institutions.

Does SUTD have an S/U or pass/fail option?expand_more

SUTD has a pass/fail grading option for certain subjects. Pass/fail grades (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) are excluded from GPA computation, similar to the S/U option at NUS. Subjects graded on a pass/fail basis still count towards graduation credit requirements. Check with your academic advisor for the current list of eligible subjects and the applicable semester rules.
