Quick Reference

  • • SMU uses a 4.3 GPA scale — A+ = 4.3, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, in 0.3 increments to F = 0.0
  • • Summa Cum Laude: 3.80+ | Magna Cum Laude: 3.40-3.79 | Cum Laude: 3.00-3.39
  • • Most modules carry 1 Credit Unit (CU)
  • • Dean's List typically requires a term GPA of 3.60 and above

How It Works

SMU uses a 4.3 GPA scale, distinct from the 5.0 scale used by NUS and NTU. This scale is modelled after the North American system, where A+ is the highest at 4.3 grade points and A is 4.0.

Your cumulative GPA is calculated by multiplying each module's grade point by its Credit Units (CUs), summing all the products, and dividing by the total CUs attempted. Most modules carry 1 CU.

SMU awards Latin honours instead of the class-based system: Summa Cum Laude (3.80+), Magna Cum Laude (3.40-3.79), and Cum Laude (3.00-3.39).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the SMU grading scale different from NUS and NTU?expand_more

SMU uses a 4.3 GPA scale instead of the 5.0 scale used by NUS and NTU. At SMU, an A+ awards 4.3 grade points, A gives 4.0, A- gives 3.7, B+ gives 3.3, and so on in 0.3 increments. This is closer to the North American grading system.

What GPA do I need for Latin honours at SMU?expand_more

SMU awards Latin honours based on cumulative GPA: Summa Cum Laude requires a CGPA of 3.80 and above, Magna Cum Laude requires 3.40-3.79, and Cum Laude requires 3.00-3.39. These are among the most competitive thresholds in Singapore.

How many Credit Units (CUs) does each SMU module carry?expand_more

Most SMU modules carry 1 Credit Unit (CU). However, some modules such as capstone projects or internship courses may carry 2 or more CUs. Your CGPA is weighted by the CUs of each module.

Can I use the Pass/Fail option at SMU?expand_more

Yes, SMU students can exercise Pass/Fail options for certain elective modules. Modules graded as Pass are excluded from the CGPA calculation while still counting toward graduation requirements. The number of Pass/Fail options varies by programme.

What is the Dean's List requirement at SMU?expand_more

To qualify for the Dean's List at SMU, you typically need a term GPA of 3.60 and above with a minimum course load. Some schools within SMU may have slightly different requirements.
