NUS GPA Calculator (5.0 Scale)
Calculate your NUS cumulative GPA with credit-weighted grades.
What is the NUS GPA?
The NUS Cumulative Average Point (CAP) is a credit-weighted grade point average on a 5.0 scale used by the National University of Singapore. It determines your honours classification, with A+/A awarding 5.0 points and grades decreasing in 0.5 increments down to F at 0.0.

Quick Reference
- • NUS uses a 5.0 GPA scale — A+/A = 5.0, A- = 4.5, B+ = 4.0, down to F = 0.0
- • Honours (Highest Distinction): CAP 4.50+ | Distinction: 4.00-4.49 | Merit: 3.50-3.99
- • Most modules carry 4 Modular Credits (MCs)
- • First-year students may S/U up to 32 MCs (excluded from CAP)
- • S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) option: up to 32 MCs for Year 1 students — excluded from CAP
- • CAP is cumulative across all semesters — individual semester GPAs are averaged, weighted by MCs
- • Most undergraduate programmes require CAP ≥ 2.0 for satisfactory academic standing
How It Works
NUS uses a 5.0 Cumulative Average Point (CAP) scale. Your GPA is calculated by multiplying each module's grade point by its modular credits (MCs), summing all the products, then dividing by the total number of modular credits attempted.
At NUS, both A+ and A award 5.0 grade points, A- gives 4.5, and the scale decreases in 0.5 increments down to F at 0.0. Most modules carry 4 MCs, though some may carry 2, 5, or 8 MCs depending on the faculty.
Modules graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) basis are excluded from the CAP computation. First-year students can S/U up to 32 MCs worth of modules.
Worked example: Semester 1 results — CS1101S (4 MCs, A = 5.0), MA1521 (4 MCs, A- = 4.5), ES1531 (4 MCs, B+ = 4.0), GEA1000 (4 MCs, B = 3.5), IS1128 (4 MCs, B- = 3.0). Total grade points = (5.0 + 4.5 + 4.0 + 3.5 + 3.0) × 4 = 80. Total MCs = 20. Semester GPA = 80/20 = 4.00 (Honours with Distinction level). To raise this to 4.50 in subsequent semesters requires consistent A- and above grades.
NUS Honours classification(based on cumulative CAP): Highest Distinction (summa cum laude) requires CAP ≥ 4.50; Distinction (magna cum laude) requires 4.00–4.49; Merit (cum laude) requires 3.50–3.99; Pass requires 2.00–3.49. The S/U option is strategically important for managing CAP — first-year students can S/U up to 32 MCs. Using S/U on modules where you scored below your CAP average protects your GPA. Note that S/U cannot be applied to major-prerequisite modules or core modules, and decisions are typically irrevocable.

Who This Calculator Is For
NUS Undergraduate Students
Tracking CAP (Cumulative Average Point) for degree classification.
- Scale: NUS uses CAP on 5.0 scale
- Highest Distinction: CAP ≥4.50
- Distinction: CAP ≥4.00
- Grading varies: Slightly by faculty (Law, Medicine)
Students Tracking Semester GPA
Checking each semester's performance and impact on CAP.
- Key distinction: Semester GPA ≠ CAP
- CAP calculation: Weighted average of all modules
- SU modules: Excluded from CAP
- SU option: Up to 12 MCs of SU per year
NUS Computing / Business Students
Faculty-specific grade requirements and Dean's List criteria.
- Computing: May have specific major CAP requirements
- Business BBA: Same CAP thresholds apply
- Double-degree: CAP calculated across both programmes
- Dean's List: Top 5% of cohort per semester
Graduate Students
Understanding NUS graduate grading and academic requirements.
- Coursework Masters: Minimum B (3.0) to graduate
- Academic warning: Too many modules below B
- PhD by research: No formal CAP — progress review-based
- Overseas conversions: Use official NUS equivalency tables

Frequently Asked Questions
What grading system does NUS use?expand_more
NUS uses a 5.0 GPA scale. A+ and A both award 5.0 grade points, A- gives 4.5, B+ gives 4.0, B gives 3.5, B- gives 3.0, C+ gives 2.5, C gives 2.0, D+ gives 1.5, D gives 1.0, and F gives 0.0.
What GPA do I need for honours classification at NUS?expand_more
The typical honours classification at NUS is: Honours (Highest Distinction) for CAP 4.50 and above, Honours (Distinction) for CAP 4.00-4.49, Honours (Merit) for CAP 3.50-3.99, and Honours for CAP 3.00-3.49. Exact cutoffs may vary by faculty.
What is the difference between CAP and GPA at NUS?expand_more
CAP stands for Cumulative Average Point, which is NUS's term for GPA. They are effectively the same thing — your credit-weighted average grade point across all modules taken.
How are credit units factored into GPA calculation?expand_more
Your GPA is calculated by multiplying each module's grade point by its credit units (typically 4 MCs), summing all these products, then dividing by the total credit units. Modules with more credits have a greater impact on your GPA.
How does the S/U option affect my NUS CAP?expand_more
Modules graded as Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) are excluded from CAP computation — they count toward graduation requirements but not toward your GPA. This makes the S/U option valuable for modules where you scored below your average. First-year students can S/U up to 32 MCs of modules (excluding major requirements). The strategic use of S/U is one of the most impactful decisions for CAP management at NUS — students typically save S/U options for unexpected poor performance rather than using them preemptively.
How does NUS GPA compare to other Singapore university GPAs?expand_more
NUS and NTU both use a 5.0 scale (directly comparable), SMU uses a 4.3 scale, and Polytechnics use a 4.0 scale. These different scales are not directly comparable across universities — a 4.0 on NUS/NTU means Honours with Distinction, but a 4.0 on the SMU 4.3 scale sits much higher (Magna Cum Laude territory). Employers typically look at class of honours rather than raw GPA numbers when evaluating candidates across universities. A First Class Honours or Highest Distinction is the top tier at each institution, regardless of the underlying scale.
