What are A-Level Rank Points?

A-Level rank points, formally the University Admission Score (UAS), are used by Singapore universities to assess JC applicants. Computed from your best 3 H2 and 1 H1 content subjects plus H1 GP and MTL, the maximum score is 90 points. Higher rank points indicate stronger academic performance.

Quick Reference

  • • Maximum UAS: 90 rank points (4 H2 A grades at 20 pts each + 1 H1 A at 10 pts)
  • • H2 grade points: A=20, B=17.5, C=15, D=12.5, E=10, S=5, U=0
  • • H1 grade points: A=10, B=8.75, C=7.5, D=6.25, E=5, S=2.5, U=0
  • • Medicine/Law: typically 87.5-90 pts | Business/Computing: ~82.5-87.5 pts

How It Works

The University Admission Score (UAS) is computed from your best 3 H2 subjects and 1 H1 content subject, plus H1 General Paper and H1 Mother Tongue Language (or H1 Project Work where applicable). The maximum is 90 rank points.

H2 subjects carry double the points of H1 subjects. An A in H2 gives 20 rank points, while an A in H1 gives 10 rank points. The grading scale runs from A (best) through B, C, D, E, S (sub-pass), to U (ungraded).

H3 subjects taken in addition to the standard curriculum are not included in the 90-point computation but may be considered by universities as a differentiating factor, especially for competitive courses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum A-Level rank points?expand_more

The maximum University Admission Score (UAS) is 90 rank points. This is achieved with 4 H2 distinctions (A grade = 20 points each = 80 points) plus a H1 distinction (A grade = 10 points). Note that H3 subjects are not included in the 90-point computation but may be considered qualitatively by universities.

How do H2 and H1 subjects differ in grading?expand_more

H2 subjects are graded on a scale from A to U (Ungraded), with rank points: A=20, B=17.5, C=15, D=12.5, E=10, S=5, U=0. H1 subjects use the same letter grades but with half the points: A=10, B=8.75, C=7.5, D=6.25, E=5, S=2.5, U=0. H1 Mother Tongue Language (MTL) is scored out of a maximum of 10 points.

How does H3 affect university admission?expand_more

H3 subjects are not included in the 90-point rank point calculation. However, strong H3 performance (Distinction or Merit) may be considered favourably during university admission, especially for competitive courses. H3 grades are: Distinction, Merit, Pass, and Ungraded.

What rank points do I need for popular university courses?expand_more

Indicative grade profiles vary by university and course. As a general guide: Medicine and Law typically require 87.5-90 points, Business and Computing around 82.5-87.5, Engineering around 75-82.5, and Arts and Social Sciences around 70-80. Check the specific university's indicative grade profile for the most accurate cutoffs.

Do bonus points apply to A-Level rank points?expand_more

Unlike O-Levels, there are no CCA bonus points for A-Level university admission. However, some discretionary admission schemes and aptitude-based admissions may consider CCA achievements, leadership, and other holistic factors beyond rank points.
