How we calculate it
The Singapore guest convention is to cover your seat cost at the banquet. We take the published banquet price per pax, add service charge (10%) and GST (9%), then round up to the next auspicious number.
nett seat cost = banquet_price × 1.10 × 1.09 + relationship = friend +$20, close friend +$50, sibling +$150… + day/occasion = Saturday +$20, public holiday +$30, auspicious +$20 × plus-one = solo ×1, couple ×2, family ×N → round up to 88, 108, 128, 158, 168, 188, 208, 218, 238, 258…
Auspicious amounts — and what to avoid
Lucky endings
Amounts ending in 8 are the most auspicious — 八 (bā) sounds like 发 (fā), meaning prosperity.
Endings in 6 (六 liù → 流, smooth flow) and even numbers are also preferred.
Numbers to avoid
Skip anything with the digit 4 — 四 (sì) sounds like 死 (sǐ), meaning death.
Odd-ending amounts are also avoided. Our ladder of 88, 108, 128, 158, 168… skips all "4" values.

Frequently asked questions
How much ang bao should I give for a Singapore wedding in 2026?expand_more
A safe guide is to cover the seat cost: take the per-pax banquet price, add service charge (10%) and GST (9%), then round up to an auspicious number ending in 8. For most luxury hotel weddings in 2026, this lands between $288 and $488 per person.
What is the formula for calculating ang bao?expand_more
Nett seat cost = (banquet price per pax) × 1.10 × 1.09. Add a small top-up based on your relationship to the couple (+$0 to +$150), then round up to the next auspicious amount (88, 108, 128, 158, 168, 188, 208, etc.). Avoid any number containing the digit "4".
Do I give more if the wedding is on a Saturday or public holiday?expand_more
Yes. Saturday dinner banquets usually cost the venue ~$20 more per pax. Eve of public holiday or auspicious dates add $20–$30. The calculator factors this in automatically.
What if I am bringing a plus one?expand_more
Double the suggested amount. If you bring your partner and children (family of N), multiply by N. Most calculators undercount this — we make it explicit so you do not awkwardly under-give.
I am invited but cannot attend — should I still give ang bao?expand_more
Yes, etiquette is to give a flat goodwill amount of $50–$100, depending on closeness. The calculator handles this with the "Can't attend" option and skips the seat-cost logic.
Why avoid the number 4?expand_more
In Chinese culture, the digit 4 (四 sì) sounds similar to the word for death (死 sǐ). Auspicious ang bao amounts skip any value containing a 4 — that is why the ladder goes 88, 108, 128, 158 (not 148).
Is ang bao given at the tea ceremony different from at the banquet?expand_more
Yes. Tea ceremony ang baos are typically given by immediate family and close elders, and amounts follow different conventions (often paired with jewellery or symbolic amounts). The calculator focuses on the guest-at-banquet scenario.
How do you know the venue rates?expand_more
For hotels we surface, rates are either taken from publicly available aggregator estimates (most cases — labelled "secondary") or community-verified estimates. We re-check secondary rates every 90 days. Direct quote from the venue is always more accurate.
Does this apply to Malay or Indian weddings?expand_more
No. The "match the seat cost" convention is for Chinese banquets. Malay weddings (duit salam) typically see amounts of $10–$70, and Indian weddings follow different giving conventions. We will add dedicated calculators for both in a future release.
Can I trust these numbers?expand_more
They are research-backed industry estimates, not quotes from the venues themselves. Treat them as a starting point — your relationship to the couple matters more than the venue tier. The calculator gives you a defensible middle.
