The JC cut-off picture in 2026 sits at one of its most competitive points in years — the 2024 O-Level cohort produced strong distinction rates, pushing net L1R5 cut-offs lower across the board. Knowing where you (or your child) stand against current cut-offs is essential for ordering JAE choices.
Use the O-Level Points Calculator to model your raw L1R5 and net L1R5 with bonus deductions.
The L1R5 formula explained
Your net L1R5 = Raw L1R5 − CCA bonus − HMT bonus
Raw L1R5:
- L1: English Language (1 subject)
- R5: 5 best subjects from these categories:
- 1 Humanities subject (e.g. Combined Humanities, Geography, History, Literature)
- 1 Math/Science subject (e.g. A-Math, E-Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
- 3 more subjects, with at least 1 being Math or Science (so total Math/Science = at least 2)
CCA bonus:
- Sustained CCA at A grade (Grade 1): −2 points
- Sustained CCA at B grade (Grade 2): −1 point
- Less sustained / lower grade: 0 points
HMT (Higher Mother Tongue) bonus:
- Distinction (D1/D2): −2 points
- Merit (M3): −2 points
- Pass: −1 point
Maximum bonus deduction is 4 points (2 CCA + 2 HMT).
2026 indicative JC cut-off ranges
These are based on 2025 JAE results (the most recent COPs published). Final 2026 COPs will be published after the February 2026 JAE.
Top tier (Net L1R5: 4–6)
| JC | Sciences | Humanities | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raffles JC | IP route | IP route | JAE admission rare |
| Hwa Chong Institution | IP route | IP route | JAE admission rare |
| National JC | 5 | 4 | Strong sciences focus |
| Victoria JC | 6 | 5 | Top JAE college |
| Anglo-Chinese JC | 6 | 5 | Mission school heritage |
| Anderson Serangoon JC | 7 | 6 | Merger school |
| Eunoia JC | 7 | 6 | Newer, IP + JAE |
Strong mid-tier (Net L1R5: 7–9)
| JC | Sciences | Humanities |
|---|---|---|
| Catholic JC | 8 | 7 |
| Temasek JC | 8 | 7 |
| Yishun Innova JC | 8 | 7 |
| Tampines Meridian JC | 8 | 7 |
| St Andrew's JC | 9 | 8 |
Lower-tier (Net L1R5: 10+)
| JC | Sciences | Humanities |
|---|---|---|
| Jurong Pioneer JC | 10 | 9 |
| Millennia Institute (3-year) | 12 | 11 |
| ACS Independent (J2 entry) | 11 | 10 |
These are indicative — actual cut-offs vary by exact stream / subject combination chosen.
Worked example: Calculating net L1R5
Student's O-Level results:
- English: A1 → 1 point
- Higher Chinese: D1 (Distinction)
- A-Math: B3 → 3 points
- E-Math: A2 → 2 points
- Physics: A1 → 1 point
- Chemistry: A2 → 2 points
- Biology: B3 → 3 points
- Combined Humanities: A2 → 2 points
- D&T: B4 → 4 points
Best 6 (L1R5):
- English: 1
- Combined Humanities: 2
- A-Math (or E-Math): 2 (taking the better)
- Physics: 1
- Chemistry: 2
- Biology: 3
Raw L1R5 = 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 3 = 11
Bonuses:
- CCA Sustained A grade: −2
- HMT Distinction: −2
Net L1R5 = 11 − 4 = 7
This student would qualify for many strong JCs in the science stream (Catholic JC, Tampines Meridian, Yishun Innova) and some top-tier humanities streams.
How JAE works
Joint Admissions Exercise timeline (for a 2025 O-Level cohort heading to JC in 2026):
- Late January 2026: O-Level results released
- Early February 2026: JAE applications open (~5 working days window)
- Mid February 2026: Posting results released
- Late February 2026: Enrolment at assigned JC begins
- Late February 2026: JC1 academic year starts
You list your top 12 choices in order. Posting is by:
- Net L1R5 (lower = priority)
- Tied scores: by citizenship (SC > PR > international)
- Then: choice order (your choice 1 beats their choice 2)
- Final: computerised ballot
Stream choice within a JC
Most JCs offer:
- Science (sub)stream A: Physics + Chemistry + Math + 1 (Biology / Computing / Mathematics II)
- Science substream B: Biology + Chemistry + Math + 1 (Physics / Other)
- Arts (sub)stream A: GP + 3 H2 humanities subjects (e.g. Literature, History, Geography)
- Arts substream B: GP + Math + 2 humanities subjects
- Mixed stream: 1 H1, 3 H2 (one humanity + two sciences, or vice versa)
The cut-off can vary slightly between streams within the same JC. Sciences often have lower cut-offs than humanities at top JCs because of higher demand.
What if you miss the cut-off?
Three pathways:
1. Polytechnic. If your O-Level results are insufficient for a JC, polytechnics may be a better fit. Net ELR2B2 (English + 2 Relevant + 2 Best) is used for poly. Most poly courses cap at L1R5 12–18 equivalent.
2. Private candidate / repeat O-Levels. Students can re-sit O-Levels in November as a private candidate. This gives one more shot at JC.
3. Millennia Institute (MI). The only 3-year JC route — for students who didn't get into a 2-year JC. MI's COP is around L1R5 12 net. Graduates take A-Levels alongside 2-year JC peers.
Special admission routes
Direct School Admission–JC (DSA-JC): Students with strong CCA, sport, arts, or leadership achievements can apply directly to a JC before O-Levels. Acceptance secures a place regardless of L1R5 (within reason — students still need to pass O-Levels).
Integrated Programme (IP): Students who entered IP from a top secondary school (RI, ACS-I, Hwa Chong, NJC, RVS, etc.) skip O-Levels entirely and proceed to JC1 of the linked JC. They take A-Levels at the end of JC2.
Diploma to JC (rare): Some poly diploma holders apply to JC, but they typically proceed directly to local university instead.
How to optimise JAE choice ordering
1. Choice 1 is your reach. A JC where your net L1R5 just meets the cut-off. Tied applicants prioritise choice 1 over choice 2.
2. Choice 2–3: Solid match. JCs where you comfortably make the cut-off with 1–2 points to spare.
3. Choice 4–6: Safety nets. JCs you'd happily attend.
4. Choice 7–12: Backup. Cover all reasonable JCs that you'd accept rather than be unposted.
If you list only 3 choices and don't get any, you'll be auto-assigned to a JC with vacancies — which may not be your preference.
Common JAE mistakes
- Forgetting CCA bonus eligibility. Confirm with school: not every CCA position counts as Sustained A grade.
- Ignoring HMT bonus. Even a Pass in HMT is worth 1 point off L1R5.
- Choosing too many top-tier choices. If your net L1R5 is 8 and your top 5 choices all have COPs of 4–6, you might be unposted from your higher choices entirely.
- Mistaking science stream COP for humanities stream COP. They differ by 1–2 points typically.
- Picking a JC just for prestige. Stream fit, distance, and CCA strength matter for the next 2 years of student life.
