Calculating Age — Quick Answer
Your exact age is the completed years, months and days from your date of birth to today, counted with real month lengths and leap years. Singapore uses the international age system (0 at birth). The Age Calculator also gives your total days lived, the weekday you were born, and the days until your next birthday.
Working out your age sounds trivial — until you need it to the exact day. Forms, applications, and milestone planning often ask for precise years, months and days, and that's where varying month lengths and leap years trip people up. This guide explains how exact age is calculated, the systems Singapore uses, and the quirks worth knowing.
How exact age is calculated
Your age is the difference between two dates, expressed in completed calendar units. The method:
- Subtract the birth year from the current year to get a starting number of years.
- Compare months and days, and "borrow" when the current day or month is earlier than the birth day or month.
For example, from 15 June 1990 to 29 June 2026 is exactly 36 years, 0 months and 14 days. But from 20 January 2000 to 10 March 2026, the day (10) is earlier than the birth day (20), so you borrow the length of the preceding month (February — 28 days in 2026) to land on 26 years, 1 month and 18 days.
This borrowing step is why you can't just assume every month is 30 days. The Age Calculator uses the real length of each month, so February, leap years, and 31-day months all come out right.
Why leap years matter
A leap year adds 29 February, making the year 366 days instead of 365. Over a long life that's a meaningful number of extra days, and it shifts day-of-week patterns. Two places it matters for age:
- Total days lived is higher than (years × 365) because of the leap days in between.
- Leap-day birthdays (29 February) only recur every four years. The common convention — and the one this calculator uses — is that a leap-day baby ages up on 1 March in non-leap years.
International age vs East Asian age
Singapore uses the international age system: you're 0 at birth and gain a year on each birthday. This is what appears on official documents and what forms expect.
You may also encounter the East Asian (or "Korean") age, a traditional system where:
- You're considered 1 year old at birth.
- Everyone adds a year at Lunar New Year, not on their individual birthday.
That makes East Asian age typically 1–2 years higher than international age, depending on where your birthday falls relative to Lunar New Year. South Korea itself moved to standardise on international age for official purposes in 2023. In Singapore, international age is the one that counts officially — but the traditional reckoning still comes up in family and cultural contexts.
Beyond years: useful age conversions
Exact age is more than a single number. Depending on what you need, the same span can be expressed as:
| Conversion | Useful for |
|---|---|
| Total months | Baby and toddler milestones (e.g. "18 months") |
| Total weeks | Pregnancy and early-infancy tracking |
| Total days | Day-counting milestones and anniversaries |
| Days to next birthday | Planning and countdowns |
| Weekday of birth | Curiosity, "what day was I born?" |
The Age Calculator shows all of these at once from a single date of birth.
Common questions and quirks
- Time zones: age is a calendar calculation, so it's based on dates, not exact hours. Singapore's single time zone keeps this simple.
- Half-birthdays and decimals: some tools express age as a decimal (e.g. 36.5 years). Completed years/months/days is more precise and is what most official contexts want.
- Future dates: you can't have a negative age — a date of birth in the future isn't valid, and the calculator will ask you to pick a past date.
Bottom line
Exact age is the completed years, months and days between your birth date and today, counted with real month lengths and leap years — not a rough years-times-365 estimate. Singapore uses the international age system, so you're 0 at birth and age up on your birthday.
